It is time for another book tag and this time it is The Book Snob TAG. I was tagged by @Sifa and actually, I feel as if I’ve done this one before. I can’t find it amongst my posts but the questions seem familiar to me. Anyway, I’ll happily do it and immortalise it on this blog!
Apparently, there are seven questions or criteria to see if I’m a book snob or not (which YOU have to decide) so let’s dive in!
Adaptation Snob: Do you always read the book before seeing the movie?
I’m including TV adaptations in this question as I’m picky with films and/or it depends on what the film is, and my answer would actually be ‘no.’ I can’t count how many times I’ve watched a TV series, especially crime/mysteries or period memoirs, not actually realising until a bit later on that it is inspired by a book series i.e. Call the Midwife, Heartbeat, Murdoch Mysteries, BONES, Rizzoli & Isles, Father Brown, Inspector Morse….etc. I find it makes me more open to the differences between the adaptation and the book, which feels freeing.
Format Snob: You can only choose one format in which to read books for the rest of your life. Which do you choose: physical books, Ebooks or audiobooks?
Based on my current reading preferences I’d say physical books. I do very much prefer the feel of a physical book in my hands and I register everything better, but I would be upset to lose access to Ebooks because I do rely on them from time to time. My Kindle paperwhite is a godsend for books initially printed in teeny-tiny fonts because I can enlarge the text, and whenever I go away I prefer packing my kindle to save on space. Plus I find it easier to read from when travelling.
Ship Snob: Would you date or marry a non-reader?
I think so. I haven’t thought about it much. I have the exact same opinion as Sifa though in that they would have to respect and understand how I feel about books and reading because if they disrespect that, they ultimately disrespect some core, fundamental, personal beliefs and I’m not okay with that.
Genre Snob: You have to ditch one genre – never to be read again in your life, which do you ditch?
I’m toying with a couple of genres but the one that I’m leaning more towards is sci-fi. Unless it is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Illuminae or a Lauren James book, I really struggle consuming anything sci-fi because they’re worlds I simply cannot mentally visualise and understand. I don’t know what it is, my brain just gets stuck and more often than not, the book is DNFed. To enjoy sci-fi, the media format has to be visual, so film or tv only.
Uber Genre Snob: you can only choose to read from one genre for the rest of your life, which genre do you choose?
I don’t like this question as my reading bounces between the majority of all the genres, but I suppose the one that does give me a wider range of books and can encompass aspects of other genres is fantasy, so I’ll go with that.
Community Snob: which genre do you think receives the most snobbery from the bookish community?
I’m not sure. I’d be inclined to go with romance though because there is always some kind of discourse surrounding it.
Snobbery Recipient: Have you ever been snubbed for something that you have been reading or for reading in general?
Yes, mainly for things I’ve been reading or how I’ve consumed the books. One of my form tutors at school who was also an English teacher snubbed me for reading Twilight (forgive me for wanting to read something lighter and more fun than the five books I was already studying across TWO languages), and my first+second year university housemate who studied English Lit always looked down on my reading taste and the fact I read primarily from my kindle. I did ultimately care because I am that kind of person who does take snubs to heart and she was always a little disrespectful to me in general, but I still read how and what I wanted to read so….
Anyway, that’s all the questions so it is now up to you. Based on these answers, am I a book snob or not? I’ll be very interested to hear what you think.
