What Have I Been Reading Lately?

I won’t start off with “long time no speak, see, or write”…I guess, although I suppose I just did, because it has been a while since I last came on here. Life has been manic, stressed, and all over the place, and blogging has definitely taken a back seat. But, it has meant that I’ve read A LOT as I’ve definitely been diving into books for escapism when I can, alongside playing many hours of Animal Crossing and Disney Dreamlight Valley, and as I finally have a few hours of freedom, I thought I would get the chance to share the standout/bulk of my reading with you.

Kay Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell.

I can’t remember when I last read a Kay Scarpetta book (maybe 2012) but a video from Louise the Big Haired Bookworm a few months ago reminded me that the entire series was on my to-reread list, and I’ve been quickly making my way through it since. It has its flaws, and there are times when the main characters get on my nerves, but now I’m picking each book up with minimal expectations, I quite enjoy it keeping me on my toes. I am now very close to the point where I stopped reading the first time so it will be interesting to read what I’ve been missing from the later books and see what will happen going forward.

Yours from the Tower by Sally Nicholls | Honeycomb by Joanne Harris | Starling House by Alix E.Harrow | The Little Village School by Gervase Phinn.

At the moment, these four books are definitely the first four to be inducted onto my ‘Favourite Books of 2024 list.’ Yours from the Tower was a powerful, moving story of friendship; Honeycomb was breathtakingly beautiful and lyrical; Starling House was haunting and captivating; The Little Village School struck a wonderful balance between humour, sadness, faith and love.

I think Starling House and Yours From the Tower were the only two books to actually be on my TBR so oops for not actually getting it down that much, but I’ve been really enjoying what I’m reading and I think it shows because I’ve been prioritising reading over crafting lately. Also, I’ve not had to DNF a lot of books, which is unheard of.

Furies: Stories of the Wicked, Wild and Untamed by a myriad of authors including Margaret Atwood, Helen Oyeyemi, Emma Donoghue and Ali Smith – A selection of sixteen contemporary feminist short stories that would usually be out of my comfort zone, but have for one reason or another, completely captured my attention.

The Cloisters by Katy Hays – I suppose you could describe this as dark academia surrounding the power of tarot. I picked this up on a whim through Borrowbox a couple of months ago and was very much enjoying it until my eyes decided they didn’t like constantly reading from my iPad. I’ve now finally got my hands on a physical copy from the library and I’m itching to pick it back up again.

Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell – My next e-book on the go as I have recently discovered I can, in fact, read from my kindle and mindlessly knit or crochet at the same time. It’s fabulous!

I hope not to stay away for too long next time, so as always, thanks for reading and have a brazzle dazzle day!
xx

Hello, I’m Emma aka pageturner92, and welcome to my little corner of the online book world. When I don’t have my head in a book, I’m either working on an endless pile of crochet or knitting projects, playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, listening to Disney music, or watching my favourite shows on repeat.
